Wise Mind: finding your inner wisdom

There is a third place between gut and head. How to find it when decisions feel impossible.

DBT distinguishes three inner states: emotion mind, reasonable mind, and wise mind in between. Wise mind is not a compromise but a quality of its own: calm, clear, with a sense of "this fits".

The three states

Emotion mind: mood drives action, everything feels urgent and absolute

Reasonable mind: facts only, needs get overridden

Wise mind: both are present, neither takes over alone

Exercise: the breath question

Sit down, feet on the floor. Breathe slowly five times. Ask your question on the in-breath, then wait on the out-breath without forcing an answer. After a few rounds a short, quiet sentence often appears. Wise mind is rarely loud.

How to recognise it

The answer is short and plain. It does not rush you. It neither shrinks nor inflates you. If an answer shouts, presses, or comes with self-contempt, it was usually emotion mind.

Practise small

Use it for tiny decisions – what to eat, whether to go outside, message now or tomorrow. Knowing the state in small moments makes it findable in hard ones.
