Build a skill chain: a concrete step-by-step example
A skill chain is a pre-prepared sequence of skills for exactly your difficult moments. Here is how to build one.
In a crisis, thinking narrows. A prepared skill chain takes the decision away from you in exactly that moment. It orders your skills by tension level and tells you in advance what to do now.
Step 1 – Rate tension in numbers
Imagine a scale from 0 to 10. 0 = relaxed, 10 = peak tension. Over the next days, briefly check your level several times a day. You will develop a feel for your own steps.
Step 2 – Match skills to levels
Which skills have helped you at which tension level before? Note 2–3 realistic skills per level. What works in bed at 3 a.m. is different from what works at work.
0–3: count breaths, make tea, write in a journal
4–6: short walk, cool water on face, call a trusted person
7–8: hold an ice cube, strong smell, 30 sec cold shower
9–10: multiple strong stimuli at once, emergency line, crisis hotline
Step 3 – Write it down, keep it visible
Write the chain on a card or save it in your phone notes. In an acute moment, no one has the energy to invent skills. You need them within reach.
Step 4 – Practise when it is calm
Try the individual skills at low tension. Then your body has "done" them before the crisis hits. Skills you only know in theory rarely work in the acute moment.
Step 5 – Review
After each use: briefly record your tension, which skill helped and which did not. Over weeks a more and more precise chain emerges that fits you.
